Sherry Xiaohong Chen

Sherry X. Chen’s current works are a result of years searching and struggling for a more authentic self expression. These minimalistic paintings are inspired by nature, architectural forms, and every day objects. They are also more of a longing for simplicity and serenity. Using the geometric shapes to reflect the basics and importance of our existence and meaning in everyday life. They reflect her inner emotions and feelings relating to life in general. In these paintings, Chen tries to examine the ratio and relationships between shapes and colors, and their effect on the mood of a painting. She feels everything she wants to say can be expressed through variations of shape, color and texture.

Chen feels by eliminating the desire to have more in a painting, she can better focus on reaching the place she wants to go.

As she said: “I am trying to find meaning in the ordinary, depth in the simplicity, and grandeur in the minimal. Nature is always uncomplicated and direct, but yet mysterious and full of possibilities”.

Chen received her B.F.A. from the Central Academy of Art and Design, Beijing, China (now the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University) and M.A in Fine Art at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina.
