Eva Zuzuarregui

Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico Eva was surrounded by creative and talented people that influenced her world view through art. She spent her childhood observing her father painting and at a very young age she became interested in learning design with her grandmother, a fashion designer.

Leaving her native Mexico 15 years ago, she followed her dream to study art. She fell in love with metals and achieved a BA degree with an emphasis in Jewelry and Metalwork at SDSU. In 2012 she was selected to participate in the Annual Juried Student Exhibition “Confluence”, presented by the Society of North American Goldsmiths in Toronto Canada. In 2013 she was selected as a participant and awarded honorable mention in “The Lewton-Brain Fold-Form Competition”, and in 2015 she was selected to participate at the Biennial juried International Exhibition “Alchemy 3” by the Enamellist Society.

Today she works with passion at her recently established studio at Barrio Logan, where she works with two other artists. In January 2015 they founded “VAR Collective” for the designing, collaborating and making of contemporary art and jewelry.
Living in the coastal community of Carlsbad, CA, she is in constant contact with nature, making it her persistent inspiration. Using fold-forming, enameling and repouseé techniques she designs pieces that reflect the environment around her.

“My jewelry presents an ongoing passion for design, curiosity and exploration in the transformation of material. Using sterling silver as my main material, I am able to manipulate it until it is transformed into unexpected shapes and textures. When creating my pieces I keep in mind the wearer, making sure to represent volume but remain light and comfortable.
I also like to introduce elements such as movement and sound. These elements come alive when the pieces are worn, and the wearer becomes part of the piece, creating a dialogue between the wearer and the piece.” – Zuzuarregui
