The butterfly is one of the most beautiful examples in nature of being transformed into something new. It’s a glorious remaking. I’ve seen the wonder of this metamorphosis firsthand at my aunt and uncle’s Monarch butterfly farm in Northern California. They raise this species to help repopulate its dwindling numbers and also allow for the enjoyment of their butterfly releases at special events signifying new life and seasons of change. Essentially, that’s what this painting is all about – the morphing of the familiar into a spectacular, fresh and original creation. A simple piece of wood becomes the canvas for this imaginary, soulful bird with butterfly wings and a glimpse into a world hinting to be explored. It seemed fitting to include the celebrated Monarch butterfly in the painting for this special grand opening show and unveiling of the transformation of an old, historic building into something new – the Sparks Gallery.
