“The faces in ‘Ascension’ may represent the human fascination with flight, the Buddhist belief of Enlightenment, or just something personal – I’m unable to explain. Birds are commonly a symbol for freedom and perspective, while many cultures feel they symbolize a link between heaven and earth. Egyptians believe a bird symbol represents the power of the soul leaving a person’s body.
Birds have been a recurring theme in my work, representing a multitude of meanings, for as long as I can remember. Among other things, ‘Ascension’ relates to recent travels with my life partner. I can only hope it will evoke such personal experiences for the viewer. Between description and interpretation lies much space for creation. It is within this space that I strive for my work to exist.” – Wixon
