Description

“Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon in Iceland, is widely known for its huge blocks of ice that break off of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and float into it. Some float out to sea and end up washed up on the nearby black sand beaches. But others lodge themselves into an area and can get stuck in one place for several days before breaking up and repositioning themselves towards their journey from the glacier to the Atlantic Ocean. The part I love the most about this amazing place is that every time you visit, it will always be different. As a matter of fact, on the day I captured this image a giant chunk of ice that was as large as a car broke off and floated into another making a loud crack. Then it was slowly ground into nothing by the current of the lagoon’s stream, and then headed out to sea. ‘Breaking Away’ captures the quiet serenity of the giant pieces of ice that had piled up that day. In time, they will all meet the same fate as the one I witnessed earlier, slowly melting and eventually joining the sea.” – Jon Barnes
