Description

I love anything old, something with a history to it as I mention in my artist statement and these permanent lifeguard towers fit right in there, they’ve been here for decades. I shot this piece when I was working to create art work for the guest rooms of the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort and Spa. This tower is on South Carlsbad State Beach, where the hotel is located along the 101. An hour earlier or so I shot a photo of a wave crashing into stairs at that beach, and I got soaked by that same wave almost up to my waist. At this point I didn’t care anymore about getting wet so I stood in the water when I got a shot of this tower. This is a black and white photograph on chemically developed Fuji Crystal Archive Photo Paper and hand colored with oils.
