Description

“Middle East, 2300 B.C.E.

In the Biblical tradition, Lilith was the first woman, created simultaneously with Adam. In the beginning, they got along quite well, but then Adam tried to force Lilith sexually. She refused, insisting on maintaining equality with him. Adam complained to God who turned against Lilith. She then grew wings and flew out of Paradise to live in the desert. Then God created Eve who was more compliant.

Lilith’s story tells us of the essential role that the suppression of female sexuality plays in the transition between egalitarian and hierarchical culture. In spite of adversity and exile, Lilith remains independent and wild. As we reclaim Lilith, we reclaim ourselves, our bodies and our freedom.”
