Description

I love this tower. I first painted it as far back as 1994 when I worked mainly in watercolors. I’ve known it for over 30 years. I played in a soccer league there and attended a workshop, and I even witnessed a dear friend propose to his future wife under it.

There’s an urban legend it was named “Lionel” by local schoolchildren in the 1950s.

The 100 years old “North Park Water Tower” or “Tin Man” looms large over the heart of San Diego’s earliest streetcar suburbs—North Park. The tower stands 127 feet tall and holds over 1 million gallons of water. The tank was constructed in 1924 to provide better water pressure to the quickly growing area surrounding it.

Note: In 1924, It was reputed as the “largest elevated tank in the world” 1924.
