“I love the ocean. Surfing, scuba diving, and body surfing; the ocean has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. While on a night dive at La Jolla Shores, I witnessed the beauty of the ‘Rays’ enjoying squid. Gently gliding to the sandy ocean bottom, then gracefully, a wide mouth scooped up as many squid eggs as possible. Hundreds of them danced during our dive. The moonlight rays glowed through the ocean and cast shadows larger than life on the sand below us. A sight I will never forget.
It was time to make this fellow the main attraction. To educate those ocean ‘goers’, rather than the typical fear factor of a shark. It was these moments that gave me the desire to create a sculpture that represents beauty and awareness to our beaches of California. The rays are exhibited with kelp, which I add from the beach where I swim.” – Salinsky
