“With this painting, I began working with spray paint, a medium I had always associated with graffiti and street art, and thought of as a lesser form. It was after a studio visit with the artist Sterling Ruby when I saw how he used spray paint with such freedom to create lush beautiful paintings that I dropped my opinion about this medium. I found that its innate qualities to seamlessly create misty vaporous passages that give paintings a mysterious atmospheric depth were a revelation. The halo of white surrounding the black form floating in the foreground has an intriguing complexity and an ambiguity that suggests a psychological state of mind: that space of uncertainty in which there are no correct answers: we can only act, move forward, and then see where we stand.” – Sanders
