“In the spring of 2010 I was involved in a long-term project in Jiangxi province, half way between Hong Kong and Shanghai. It was my first trip to this off-the beaten-path region. I was intensely curious about this backwater, and my eyes and heart were wide open. During a three-month period, I captured over ten thousand images of intriguing and sometimes powerful documentaries of people and places. It was a stimulating, challenging, and overwhelming experience. A year after my return I started working through these rich sources. It was an unexpectedly reflective and emotional process that posed many questions. How do we face the past, how do we relate to the past, and what does the past says about us? Eventually I developed an interconnected body of work.” –Li Huai
