Starting in 2011 while working on my wood and clay pieces I began a series of brick and mortar sculptures in terra cotta. I was interested in the contrast of the soft sensuousness of the human body, the fragility of body parts such as the heart or ear and the impenetrable stability of bricks. I had also been thinking about the ancient wall pieces of the Babylonians and how they created friezes of animals and dragons growing directly out of the brick walls, incredibly life-like although so obviously of brick. I am continually interested in these visual and tactile contradictions and find it opens up my work by delving in these two directions.
