“My main preoccupation in art-making is the body. From my years as a modern dancer and choreographer, and then as a professional ballroom dancer, I never tire of exploring the body moving through space.
I began my “Large Nudes” as a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey, where I enlarged 20-minute gouache studies in my spacious Turkish studio. Each painting is started upside-down, then turned to the side, the other side, and finally finished upright. The drips of paint leave a trace of this process, creating a modern grid that both locates the nude and separates the viewer from it. My goal is to connect the physicality of painting to the sensual body in motion.” –Stump
